NOBLESSE OBLIGE, noun, (noh-BLES oh-BLEEZH) is a French phrase meaning “nobility obligates.” The Students Manual states that it means “your nobility, your dignity is great, and great, therefore, is your responsibility.” Literally means that nobility obliges those in high positions to be responsible.” The motto was included in the new school seal when it was registered with the Intellectual Property Philippines in 2006. “Noblesse Oblige – (no-BLESS oh-BLEEGE) literally means that nobility obliges those in high positions to be responsible.” From the “Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins” (Second Edition, HarperCollins, 1977) by William and Mary Morris. Used in a sentence: "… (today) when there are not many persons with the noble ranks of old, it is used mainly in speaking of the generosity of the rich to charity. With their resources, they can afford to exercise noblesse oblige, particularly if it’s tax deductible.” Another source has this notion of aristocratic responsibilities: the idea that people born into the nobility or upper social classes must behave in an honorable generous way toward those less privileged. (Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2003). Text above was contributed by Vernon Robert l. Funk of Class 1991. The Webster’s Third International Dictionary states that noblesse oblige is the “obligation of honorable, generous, and responsible behavior that concomitant of high rank or birth”. It also refers to the belief that the wealthy and privileged are obliged to help those less fortunate. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. Edited by E.D. Hirsch, Jr., Joseph F. Adulthood brings responsibilities. Let these not scare you. Responsibilities, when faced with courage and God-given power, make life worth living. Let your life be governed by the highest principles which the school imparts to you.
